PEACE got officially started

Under the DLR coordination, the PEACE project on high-pressure alkaline electrolysis system of H2 production started in June 2023.

On the 1st of June 2023, the PEACE project, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, officially started under the coordination of the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR)!

As green hydrogen paves the way for a climate-neutral future of the EU, our PEACE goal is to reduce the cost of hydrogen alkaline electrolysis (AEL) production to boost the hydrogen economy. We propose a combination of innovative technological advancements at the electrolysis cell and stack components level, the AEL system level (including the innovation of dual pressurisation), as well as in the construction of the AEL system (Balance of Plant) and its integration with subsequent users (such as downstream chemical units).

In the PEACE project, we will construct an AEL system demonstrator with a capacity of over 50kW, capable of operating at pressures of more than 50bar. This hydrogen production unit will encompass all the technological innovations developed in the PEACE project. It will be operated to test its functionality and to validate the data acquired through the DLR’s simulation framework. Subsequently, we will design a concept for an efficient hydrogen production plant integrated with downstream processes that will directly use the hydrogen produced by the PEACE technology. Furthermore, we will assess the environmental impacts of the PEACE technology to provide a comprehensive evaluation of our innovation.

PEACE is a collaborative research and innovation initiative involving a consortium of seven institutions. The scientific core of the PEACE team consists of three renowned research organizations: Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The evaluation of technology impacts will be conducted by Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The concept of integrating PEACE hydrogen production with a chemical plant will be proposed by HyCC - one of the world’s largest hydrogen companies. Finally, two SMEs - Materials Mates Italia SRL (MMI) and GRANT Garant s.r.o. (GG) – contribute their expertise and flexibility to enrich the project.

In three years, the PEACE team will deliver its results, aiming to achieve a technological breakthrough that positions Europe as a leader in highly pressurized AEL technology. Follow our progress on Twitter and LinkedIn and remember to subscribe to our quarterly PEACE newsletter.
