PEACE Project at EHEC, Seville - March 2026

Published: March 3, 2026

The PEACE project will be represented at the renowned  European Hydrogen Energy Conference (EHEC) taking place on 11 – 13 March 2026 in Seville, Spain.

PEACE project team member Akshata Barge (German Aerospace Center - DLR) will present a poster entitled: “Investigation of Alkaline Water Electrolyzer Response under Various Operational Conditions”.

The poster is co-authored by Davide Grilli, Dirk Ullmer, Hans Wiggenhauser, Kamal Ghotia, Fatemeh  Razmjooei & Asif Ansar (all DLR).

Highly pressurized alkaline water electrolysis represents a key innovation pathway for reducing the cost of hydrogen production. Operating under pressure offers significant advantages, such as reduced downstream compression requirements or improved system integration flexibility.

At the same time, pressurized operation introduces technical challenges. One of the most critical is an increased risk of gas impurities, which may affect system safety, efficiency, and hydrogen quality. Balancing these benefits and risks is essential to enable safe and cost-effective large-scale deployment.

To better understand these trade-offs, the PEACE team conducted an experimental investigation of alkaline water electrolyzers under variable operating conditions and pressurized environments. The DLR team applied its established modelling framework, TEMPEST, to represent the pressurized system. The model focused particularly on:

  • Temperature distribution within the stack
  • Gas purity evolution under varying operating conditions
  • Identification of critical operational boundaries during pressurized operation

This approach enables deeper insight into system behaviour and supports the definition of safe and optimal operating windows.

Akshata’s poster will be on display from 11 to 13 March 2026 at Fibes II, Conference and Exhibition Centre in Seville.
